Frequently Asked Questions

What grades does Hancock Day School serve?

Hancock is an independent, nonsectarian school serving students from PreK (age 4) through 8th grade. As Savannah's only school of its kind, we focus exclusively on these formative years — building deep roots in academics and character so students are ready to fly into the most competitive high schools in the region.

What makes Hancock different from other Savannah schools?

Hancock pairs rigorous academics with intentional character development in a tight-knit, values-driven community. Our PreK–8 focus means we're specialists in this stage of a child's development, not generalists, and our small class sizes ensure every student is genuinely known. The result is graduates who are both high-achieving and grounded — confident in who they are and prepared for what comes next.

What is "The Hancock Way"?

The Hancock Way is our shared ethos — an aspirational standard for how we learn, lead, and treat one another. It includes personal responsibility, shared accountability, civility, and the belief that character isn't just taught, it's lived. Students engage with a core Hancock Value every month through community gatherings and service.

Where do Hancock graduates go to high school?

Our graduates consistently place into and excel at Savannah's most competitive high schools. Because preparing students for that next step is central to our mission, we work closely with families throughout middle school on high school placement — and our reputation with area high schools speaks to how well-prepared our students arrive.

How much does tuition cost?

Tuition for the current school year ranges from $14,175 for PreK to $16,600 for 8th grade, with grades in between scaled accordingly. Visit our Tuition page for the full schedule and details on what's included.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. Hancock families have access to several tuition assistance options, including the Georgia Promise Scholarship, Apogee Scholarships, and a multi-child discount. We're happy to walk you through what's available during your visit.

What does the admissions process look like?

The path is straightforward: Inquiry → Visit (Admissions Preview or private tour) → Application → Testing → Decision. Applications include a $175 fee, and we offer age-appropriate readiness assessments for our youngest students and ISEE testing for grades 2–8. Students applying to grades 4–8 may also schedule an optional Shadow Day to experience a day in the life at Hancock.

When does enrollment open?

Rolling admissions for the 2026–2027 school year are open now, with applications accepted on a space-available basis. Applications for 2027–2028 open September 1, 2026, with testing in January and February and admissions decisions emailed in late February.

What ages do PreK and Kindergarten students need to be?

PreK students must turn 4 on or before September 1, and Kindergarten students must turn 5 on or before September 1.

What are class sizes like?

Small — and intentionally so. Small class sizes are core to who we are, allowing teachers to know each student personally, tailor instruction, and build the strong school-home partnership Hancock families value.

What does academic life look like at Hancock?

Our academic program is a deliberate progression. Primary School builds confidence in phonics, reading, and math fundamentals in a nurturing environment. Lower School introduces greater autonomy, letter grades, and the work habits that prepare students for Middle School. By 8th grade, students take on rigorous coursework, leadership opportunities, and community service — graduating with the knowledge and confidence to thrive in any high school environment.

What programs does Hancock offer beyond academics?

Hancock students enjoy a robust athletics program, fine arts, events and traditions that bring our community together, and after-school care. We believe a well-rounded education includes the arts, athletics, and the friendships built through shared experiences.

What kind of community will my family find at Hancock?

Hancock's community is genuinely close-knit. From morning greetings to afternoon carpool, our families, teachers, and students know one another. Parents are partners in their children's education, and many of our families describe Hancock as feeling like an extension of home.

How do I schedule a visit?

The best way to know if Hancock is right for your family is to see us in person. Submit the inquiry form on this page and our admissions team will reach out to arrange an Admissions Preview or private tour.
